Apple's latest iPhone 18 Pro models came out mid-September to much fanfare, but not all users have had a seamless onboarding experience, with some owners of the new models reporting that Face ID authentication isn't always working as it should.

Posts on social media indicate that certain authentication scenarios like using Face ID to unlock a locked app doesn't always work on the devices. There have also been reports of iPhone 18 Pro models freezing and rebooting when Face ID is activated.
Not only that, MacRumors forum members have reported additional problems, such as receiving a "Face ID is Not Available Message" notification during the authentication setup process. The "Require Attention for Face ID" setting is also said to be not working in some cases.
Fortunately, Apple was listening, and on September 28 the company issued an update for iOS 27 that addresses the Face ID issues. So if you're experiencing similar problems, download iOS 27.0.1. You can do so over the air by going to Settings ➝ General ➝ Software Update.
For the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple moved the Face ID infrared camera under the display for the first time, but it's unclear if the hardware has been causing a problem. Either way, the update should fix any issues you're having.
